Among the several sub-specialties of orthopedics, sports medicine is perhaps the most common. Many orthopedic surgeons go on to become fellowship-trained in sports medicine. This allows them to better treat athletes and specific sports-related injuries. The goal is always to heal and rehabilitate the injury so patients can return to their favorite activities quickly. Whether it’s little league, recreational play, or a high school, college, or professional sport – Dr. Gregory H Tchejeyan is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who offers specialized care for athletes!
Fellowship Trained
Upon completing his residency, and due to his interest in athletics, Dr. Tchejeyan decided to pursue additional training at a fellowship in New York City that focused on sports medicine, particularly the knee. There, he studied under the tutelage of a world-renowned professor, Dr. John Insall, and other great surgeons who specialized in joint replacements and all types of knee surgeries. Sure, all that experience was great for the resume, but his sports-fan patients are more impressed that he was a part of the doctor team for the Knicks and the Yankees!
An Experienced Athlete
Dr. Tchejyan famously said, “A physician is an advocate for health, but I believe they should also be an example of health!” Around his 40th birthday, Dr. T. decided to train for and compete in his first Ironman Triathlon. An athlete himself, Dr. T. knows that his active patients don’t want to be told not to do what they love! That’s why he focuses on each patient’s unique injury in order to maximize their ability to continue their passion!
Advice For Athletes
Dr. Tchejeyan strongly encourages all athletes to take care of themselves before, during, and after physical activity. Athletes should see a doctor on a regular basis to ensure that they are performing at their peak level and to detect any problems in their earliest stages. Continuing to exercise or play sports with an injury can significantly worsen the severity of the condition.
There are a few things athletes can do to prevent injuries before they begin:
- Staying hydrated
- Taking time to rest
- Don’t work out on an empty stomach
- Warm-up before exercising
- Increase activity level gradually
- Get enough sleep
These simple practices can keep an athlete healthy in body and mind!
Comprehensive Care For Athletes
Comprehensive care means that every facet of healing is provided for in the treatment plan. Just like a sports team, many physicians work together to help the patient regain maximum use of the injured limb or joint. “Players” on the team are typically the physician, orthopedic surgeon, rehabilitation specialist, athletic trainer, and physical therapist – and the patient him/herself. Our doctors have specialized training in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sports injuries, and can help athletes return to their favorite activities as quickly as possible through the most advanced, minimally invasive treatments available.
Common Injuries Treated
Because of the frequent use, wear-and-tear, and risk of falls/accidents associated with sports activities, athletes are often susceptible to orthopedic injuries, including a stress fracture, chronic pain, or even tearing or stretching of internal structures.
Here are some of the conditions that we treat here at TJN Orthopedics:
- ACL Tears
- Compartment Syndrome
- Fractures
- Heat Exhaustion
- Muscle Contusions (Bruise)
- Muscle Cramps
- Shin Splints
- Sprains & Strains
- Stress Fractures
- Torn Tendons & Ligaments
- Torn and Loose Cartilage
Specialized Care = Healing The Right Way
All patients deserve unique, specialized attention to their injury. When it comes to athletes, Dr. T. has a unique understanding of their injuries. An avid fisherman, hiker, runner, and biker, he can relate to the joys of being active and the pains of injuries that can unfortunately occur. That’s why he does his part to help athletes at his clinic and beyond. In fact, Dr. T. has spoken on several podcasts and to cycling groups to help educate and inform them about injury prevention.
I’m so passionate about the sports medicine specialty. I love helping people stay active, and preserve their joints…not always by having surgery, but even utilizing exercises and lifestyle changes to maximize joint health.”
